REDUCE YOUR CO2 EMISSIONS
May 15, 2008 – 7:00 pmSteps we can all take to drive down our CO2 emissions.
- STOP YOUR IDLING. An idling engine wastes fuel and adds to CO2 emissions. If the vehicle is likely to be at a standstill for more than a few minutes, turn off the engine.
- WHAT YOUR WEIGHT. Remove excess weight from the vehicle. An extra 100 lbm (45 kg) reduces miles per gallon by up to 2%. Extra weight can also affect safe handling.
- SELECT THE RIGHT GEAR. Over-revving and lugging the engine waste fuel. Driving in a gear lower than needed or keeping the engine in top gear on hills and corners are also wasteful.
- SMOOTH IT OUT. Maintaining a constant speed is more fuel efficient and means fewer greenhouse gases.
- READ THE ROAD. Keep an eye on the traffic ahead of you and decelerate early. This helps the vehicle to slow down more gradually, which saves fuel.
- DON’T BE UNDER PRESSURE. Make sure tires are inflated correctly. Under inflated tires increase rolling resistance and fuel use by up to 5%, and they are the No. 1 cause of blowouts.
- STICK TO THE SPEED LIMIT. Stying within the speed limit increases drive safety. It also reduces CO2 emissions. Passenger vehicles are engineered to give optimum fuel mileage at posted speeds. Every 5 mpg over 60 mpg decreases fuel economy by 10%. Aggressive driving such as speeding and rapid acceleration and braking lowers gas mileage by approximately 33% at highway speeds and 5% in the city. Driving a bit more slowly also increases your ability to recognize and respond safely to driving hazards.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN… don’t start your engines. Think before you drive. Plan your trips ahead of time to avoid back-tracking. And ask if you really need to start the engine.

The best thing about reducing your CO2 is that there are two benefits. Not only does it help the environment but it uses less fuel which saves money. With the way fuel prices are at the moment, the more we can do to reduce the amount that we use, the better.
