Brighter Sides & Greener Grass

April 18, 2008 – 11:00 am

“The grass is always greener on the other side”

“Look on the bright side”

I don’t expect a couple of words to persuade you that all will be fine when obstacles jump in the way of your goals and dreams. I am all too familiar with being held back and diverted away from what I am trying to reach. I’ve probably heard all the slogans in the book! I’ve even nearly given up a lot of times and this may be something that you may run into as well if you haven’t already.

Last month, I spoke on Lakshmi Tatma and how what we may see as obstacles may just be blessings. I want to touch on this just a bit more. Mainly, concerning how we may not immediately see those blessings once an obstacle has been successfully overcome, and when you don’t see those blessings and obstacles continue to come at you, you may tend to feel uninspired and discourage when you were once driven to reach your goals.

I’m not referring to just financial goals, but all goals. Personal, spiritual, academic, mental; no matter what the goal may be there’s always something out there to try to jump in your way to force you to stop doing good for yourself. I suppose it’s how the world turns. Life is full of choices, rewards and consequences, mistakes and mishaps and it’s up to you to decide how are you going to let that decide your life.

Even today, I am faced with obstacles and adversaries that continue to stand in my way; but I have made the decision a long time ago not to allow such things to stop me. When I do feel like giving up, I ask myself these three questions:

  • “What will I do if I do give up?”
  • “Where will my life lead if I give up?”
  • “Is it worth it?”

And every time I have the same answers. If I give up, I wouldn’t know what to do; my life would probably lead to the point where I was two years ago; and frankly, it’s never worth it. Basically, what I’m saying is “Don’t give up.” I know you probably heard that slogan one too many times, but what I am persuading is that you do what you can to take that extra step into not giving up. Ask yourself, what will happen if you do give up. Most likely, when you put more than enough thought into you, you’ll find that it’s not worth it.
