Have You Googled Yourself Lately? Part 1: The Initial Search

April 3, 2008 – 7:00 am

I received a tip that one way to help build your name through branding methods is to make sure you return good results when you “Google” your own name. Actually I never thought of that. What kind of results would turn up if I googled “Anthoney Grigsby”? What can a person learn about me? I decided to put it to the test. As of March 26, 2008, these are the results that turned up. Now I was advised to go with the first three pages, but I went the extra mile and took on the first five pages (duplicates and foreign pages have been removed, in fact how did I end up on a Japanese site?).

What does this say about me?
Let’s see I have investing sites, social networking profiles, my websites, past websites, podcast sites, and even my blood donor site. My name even lists my past companies and failed attempts. Most of this is surrounded around finance, in general. If I didn’t know me and had to guess who I am, I would say that I am a business oriented person looking to tap into some type of financial sector (primarily investments) by networking with other individuals through social networking and presenting my information and findings through the Internet and podcasts. It also says I’m persistent with past failures and I care about the world and the future by my blood donations. Wow, I think I like me! You can learn a lot about yourself by just “googling” yourself.

How Can It Be Beneficial To You?
These days everybody is googling. Employers, schools, girlfriends/boyfriends, husbands/wives, friends, families, or even someone with the same name to see who else is out there in the world. With such strong search engines out there and the fact that “you can find anything on the Internet”, people are using search engines to learn these things about you before they even get to know you. Say thanks to the advancement of technology and networking, ergo “The Virtual Handshake”. Your search results will determine if potentials (whether it be business or personal) will shake your hand or spit in it before they even meet you. If it doesn’t seem important to you, consider this, how many people really use the yellow pages these days? I know I don’t. I’m not pushing SEO or “Internet marketing” attempts, but I learned that there is a definite importance behind what we call a first impression.

What to do now?
I can take two options from here.

OPTION 1 - Update these old and unknown profiles that are at the top of the list with new information, in case if anyone were to search my name.
OPTION 2 - Focus on building up profiles that I really want exposed.

Here’s what I would like to see after that Google Search. I do like to see myself as an active investor, but I really want more focus on being a personal financial coach and Internet consultant to others looking to get a better hold of their finances through my blog and podcasts. I like the fact, I’m perceived as a networker, but I would like for my past failures to dwindle down to maybe around page 10 of the search results.

So from here, I will update my current profiles on some of these unknown sites, just to keep my information up-to-date, but I will begin focus on heavily used profiles such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and my own Website, and maybe even dedicate my focus to one of those investor profiles. So if you haven’t added me as a friend yet, do so today. Visit my “ABOUT” page to see what other social networking sites I’m on. I’ll be doing both options with a more heavy focus on OPTION 2.

In The Future
I’m going to keep a steady eye on this as well as follow the options mentioned above. I’ll update my new search results in one month from March 27, 2008 and present any new progressions on April 27, 2008, and provide one last update three months on June 27, 2008. In Part 2 and Part 3 of this project, I’ll list all the steps I took to increase my goals. And if anyone has any suggestions, please leave a comment.
