I will never buy this product. Why? Not because of anything mentioned here, but because of their deceptive advertising. This company wants us to believe that their CEO is so confident in the service (or stupid enough) to display his SSN in advertising. However, I wonder how many people realize that the SSN displayed is NOT a real SSN!!!!!

How do I know this? Because all SSNs have one thing in common (other than the format and the number of digits). The 4th and 5th digits, taken as one 2-digit number, is always even. For the fake SSN in the advertising, they are saying that the SSN is 457-55-5462. The 4th and 5th digits as one number would be "55". This is an odd number, meaning the SSN is invalid.

So basically a company who says they want to protect us is telling a lie in order to get our business. Now why should I trust them?

@ CITRMS:

I can assure you that I received no type of compensation from LifeLock to speak on their company. The purpose of the article was to compare the services they provide to what we can do on our own.

I am glad, however, that you provided more information that I was unaware of. If I knew the CEO was attacked because of his ads I definitely would've mentioned it, as well as the lawsuit with credit bureaus and the FTC.

You have proven my point of the risks associated with working with a company to protect an individual's identity as opposed to taking your own steps to protect yourself.

Thanks for the info.

Hey Anthony,
Just curious, are you paid by LifeLock to shill for them? They are one of the worst scam companies out there, taking your money for services that you can do on your own for free as set by the FTC. You never mentioned the facts that Todd Davis, CEO of LifeLock has in fact had his SSN breached by these ads and was successfully used to set up accounts under another name, nor did you mention the lawsuits that have been filed by the FTC, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax against LifeLock for their unscrupulous practices.

What about the other, MORE IMPORTANT forms of Identity Theft, such as SSN, DMV, Medical and Character/Criminal. LifeLock will not protect you from these far more pervasive forms of Identity Theft. Further, LifeLock has no restoration whatsoever, they give you some forms to fill out. The best form of Identity Theft protection, as set forth by the FTC, is a service that not only educates the consumer on how to protect and prevent identity theft but one that offers a full and complete restorative service, executed by trained professionals on your behalf. There is only one company in the US that currently meets the highest of FTC criteria, KROLL. They are the world leader in risk management and is the company that the US Government hired to take over Enron and provided security for and executed the removal of all the gold that was at the bottom of the World Trade Center after 9/11.

LifeLock is nothing more than a venture capital funded hype machine whose sole purpose is to create a brand through massive advertising. The company will be sold off within a year or two.

If you want the real info on who to best protect yourself from identity theft, speak with a government certified identity theft risk management specialist and they will give you the honest and objective facts. Contact me for more info at scott@protectedidentity.info

I chose a simpler, cheaper route. I instituted a freeze on my credit through the three credit agencies. While this may not be a good solution for those always searching for new credit cards and other sources of credit, it works well for my wife and I.

When attempting this it is very important to follow each credit agency's instructions precisely. The best source that I have found on doing this is Clark Howard's web site at www.clarkhoward.com. Just enter credit freeze in his search area.

I was also concerned with ID theft and took a different route. I put a freeze on my credit at each of the credit agencies. This was cheap ($10 per agency) and one must follow the instructions from each agency precisely, but I believe it does the trick.

Of course this is not a good solution for those who are always applying for credit.

To find the specific procedures on doing this the best source is www.clarkhoward.com. Just search for credit freeze.

Great stuff,

I have always felt Lifelock was a little too stripped down for what you pay. I understand that all the things LifeLock does you can do yourself, but I pay for a lot of services that I could do. Is there enough value for what you pay? I am leaning towards, "No."

As a Financial Coach I come across people everyday who have been victim of identity fraud so I understand the crisis we are in right now. There are so many other solutions out there that are worth paying for.

Good post.

I have seen the Life Lock advertisements on TV but never investigated them. You saved AFM readers and me some time. Thanks!
