Wash Your Clothes To Fight Global Warming

March 20, 2008 – 7:00 am

Here’s an interesting fact. Over it’s lifetime, one T-Shirt can produce 9 pounds of carbon dioxide. How many T-Shirts do you own? In fact, consider the heavier materials in your closet. Short, Shirts, Jeans. Each time they are put into the washing machine there is a small amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the air. Your local washateria alone may not damage our atmosphere too much, but consider this fact; our country alone exceeds 300 million people!

When you wash your clothes there are steps that you can take to help protect the environment.

  • Wash in warm water, instead of hot water.
  • Save laundry to do fewer & bigger loads, rather than small & many loads.
  • Use energy-efficient machines.
  • Consider hanging clothes rather than using drying machines.

It’s amazing the simple things we do can make an impact on the entire world. Simply washing your clothes can make an impact on our environment and the health of our planet. You may not be able to save the world, but playing an active part is just as good.

Thanks for the advice. I currently run large loads (just because I am lazy and my laundry builds up) but I will start hanging my close. My dryer is crappy anyway and needs to be shot.

Washing clothes is always a good thing. I did not think about its impact on our enviornment. I am glad you shared this with us.
